The Ajman Tourism Development Department (ATDD) launched the 4th annual Liwa Ajman Dates Festival at an official press conference held at The Pavilion, Al Zorah, on Monday, July 24th. The festival itself will take place at the Emirates Hospitality Centre, Ajman, from the 2nd till 4th of August, 2017.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman, the Liwa Ajman Dates Festival is a major tourism event for Ajman and celebrates the country’s rich heritage and traditions.
Not only does it provide residents and visitors with an opportunity to learn more about the importance of date palm trees, the farming industry and types of produce grown in the country, however is a fun filled event with lots of activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Commenting on the upcoming event, HE Saleh Mohamed Al Geziry, Director General of ATDD, said: “The Liwa Ajman Dates Festival is a significant event for the Emirate and will offer a unique tourism experience to both residents and visitors. Set to attract more than 10,000 visitors this year, the event is a unique way of supporting and boosting tourism, in line with our strategic objective of promoting Ajman as a safe family, business and tourist destination.”
The three days Festival will showcase several cultural and heritage events, focusing on the importance of date palm trees and their benefits, in addition to a number of discussions and interactions on the significance and varieties of dates.
In addition to the above, a number of exciting, date-inspired competitions have been launched in advance, for participants to be judged and honored during the event, with some of Ajman’s renowned hotels competing in an extraordinary cooking contest in the morning of the opening day.
There will also be a Photography and Video competition (with a total prize fund of AED 17,000) and a Dates and Citrus Fruits Contest (Mazayna), which will include seven varieties of halfripe dates, namely Elite, Al Farth, Al Khallas, Al Kunaizi, Al Barhi, Al Sheshe and Lulu, as well as citrus and other fruits, such as Mangos and Guavas.
For the first time since introducing the yearly festival, there will also be a Dessert competition, inviting participants to prepare contemporary or traditional, homemade Emirati desserts, with dates being the main ingredient.
Furthermore, the cultural Festival will include a traditional market where attendees will be free to discover the different elements of the traditional bedouin lifestyle.
With a number of handmade products made from date palm leaves for instance, visitors will have an opportunity to acquire authentic local heritage products. The traditional Majlis will also allow visitors to indulge in authentic culinary delights while experiencing truly genuine Emirati hospitality.
The Culinary Corner presented offers attendees the possibility to enjoy dates in great diversity, and sample a wide variety of innovative date-inspired dishes prepared by some of Ajman’s finest chefs. Children of all ages will be kept busy in the Kids’ Corner with several activities taking place, including cultural competitions and art workshops, highlighting the health benefits of dates and the significance of palm trees.
The Festival is being organized by the Ajman Tourism Development Department, in cooperation with Diamond Sponsor, Al Foah, a Date Farming and Production Company, Gold Sponsor, Abu Dhabi Police, as well as Silver Sponsors, Ajman Chamber, Liwa Dates, the Sharjah Institute for Heritage and a logistic sponsor, the Ajman Public Transport Cooperation
